Encouraging news regarding Peanut Allergy treatment.

Here in Massachusetts, we are buried under 2 feet of snow from mega storm Juno.  In between the news reports of this snowpocalypse, there was a short segment about some promising results of a clinical trial in Australia.

A group of children were treated with combination peanut protein and a probiotic or a placebo.  Of this group, 80% of the children who had the combination developed a tolerance to peanuts as compared with only 4% of the children who had the placebo.

This fall, we were happy to hear the report from DBV Technologies of France regarding their Viaskin peanut patch.  They are having excellent results from this product and are moving forward with more trials.

In the US, there are numerous trials underway using Oral Immunotherapy to desensitize those with peanut allergies.

All of these efforts are so encouraging.  I truly believe that we are getting closer to finding a way to manage peanut allergies.  And from there, hopefully Tree Nut and all the other food allergies will be addressed.

As a mom, I don’t need a cure.  A cure would be wonderful, but all I need is for the threat of an accidental anaphylactic reaction to be removed from my life.  I don’t need Rebecca and Mary Beth to be completely carefree eating handfuls of Nuts and Peanuts.

I am OK with them always having to carry epinephrine.  I am OK with them always checking ingredients.  I am OK with them having to have ongoing treatment to keep them desensitized to a small amount of allergen.

It would be such a relief to know that an accidental reaction would not cause an anaphylactic reaction.  The quality of our lives would improve dramatically.

Thank you to all these scientists who are working towards removing this burden from so many families.  You all rock ;)
